Installing IPList / IPBlock in Ubuntu 11.10

Okay, so I will first preface with I hate Ubuntu 11.10.

  1. So many packages have been removed, raped, changed, mangled, and pooped upon
  2. Unity is shit and gnome-fallback is a BS implementation of how GNOME2 worked
  3. Other shit was just needlessly broken and its just a shitstorm

Who the hell thought it was suitable for production?

But I digress. Ubuntu 11.10 found its way onto my laptop and my pale excuse for a server back at the house. One thing I do on my server is download torrents that I send to it via a web-interface. Moral of the story, I wanted to use an IP-blocking application to weed out some bad peers (the pros and cons of doing this for purposes of anonymity or lack thereof via bittorrent can be saved for another place) . IPBlock (http://iplist.sourceforge.net) is a GUI for iplist, both made by the same guy. Works similar to PeerBlock/PeerGuardian. (There is peerguardian for linux but I simply detest it, it is many manners of difficult to use for a process that should be fairly simple.) Anyhow, the install instructions list packages for a bunch of old Ubuntu distributions, and you will notice nothing too recent.

Luckily, the packages for Ubuntu Maverick Meekrat (also unlisted but they exist) happen to work with Ubuntu 11.10(Oneiric Ocelot for you details peeps). To install, “simply” add the repositories to a new source list, via the following:

sudo pico /etc/apt/sources.list.d/iplist.list

Then, once you’ve that open, add these two lines(actually line-break them):

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ssakar/ppa/ubuntu maverick main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ssakar/ppa/ubuntu maverick main

After that, import the pgp key as stated on the installation instructions page

sudo apt-key adv —recv-keys —keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com \ C6E3D905C8BCD56BB02E6E0B39456311108B243F

Then just install with:

sudo apt-get install iplist

Beholde! Now, you too can use IP block lists.

A reference

In addition to posting images and satanic shit and whatnot (and people starving) I will also make useful posts about computer shit as I go across the interbutt and do things that people might find useful in a google search.

there.
